OPEC Report Shows Crude Oil Production Dropped In Nigeria, Six Other Countries

16 June 2022 - 4:04am

The latest report by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has shown that Nigeria’s crude oil production dropped, placing Angola ahead of the most populous African nation.

According to the OPEC Monthly Oil Market Report (MOMR) published on Wednesday and obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, crude oil output increased in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Angola, Algeria, and Congo.

However, crude oil production dropped in seven countries namely Libya, Nigeria, Iraq, Gabon, Venezuela, Iran and Equatorial Guinea.

The report showed that total OPEC-13 crude oil production averaged 28.47 million barrels per day (mb/d) in May 2022, lower by 239,000 barrels per day (tb/d) month–on–month (m-o-m).

While Saudi Arabia output increased from 10,366 tb/d in April to 10,417 tb/d in May, UAE increased from 3,015 tb/d to 3,042 tb/d, while Kuwait rose from 2,662 tb/d to 2687tb/d.

Similarly, Angola’s output increased from 1,168 tb/d in April to 1,176tb/d in May, while Algeria increased from 1,003 tb/d to 1,007tb/d, and Congo experienced a slight increase from 262tb/d to 268tb/d within the period under review.

On the contrary, crude oil output in Nigeria dropped from 1,322 tb/d to 1,258 tb/d, Libya’s production fell from 914 tb/d in April to 725 tb/d in May, while Iraq experienced a decline from 4,420 tb/d to 4,374tb/d.

The report further showed that Gabon’s crude oil production declined from 200tb/d to 169tb/d, while Venezuela dropped from 712tb/d to 711tb/d, and Iran and Equatorial Guinea fell from 2,564tb/d to 2,538tb/d and 96tb/d to 94tb/d respectively.

The OPEC report also showed that on the world oil supply, global liquids production in May decreased by 0.22 mb/d to an average 98.71 mb/d compared with April.

While non-OPEC liquids production (including OPEC Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) is estimated to have increased in May by a minor 23 tb/d m-o-m to average 70.2 mb/d, this was higher by 1.7 mb/d year-on-year (y-o-y).

The report stated that “Preliminary estimated decreases in production during May were mainly driven by Canada and the UK by 0.4 mb/d, while Eurasia and Latin America are expected to have seen growth in liquids output of 0.4 mb/d.”

NAN reported that the share of OPEC crude oil in total global production decreased by 0.2 pp to 28.8 per cent in May compared with the previous month.

Estimates were based on preliminary data from direct communication for non-OPEC supply, OPEC and non-conventional oil, while estimates for OPEC crude production are based on secondary sources.

16 June 2022 - 4:01am

Some Nigerians on Twitter have berated Abdullahi Garba Ramat, who is the chairman of Ungogo local government area of Kano for flaunting seven flashy vehicles.

The vehicles in the convoy of the council chairman could be seen in a video being driven on a dusty road in a poor neighbourhood that contrasts heavily with the expensive convoy of vehicles.

The head-turning convoy consists of a Toyota Tacoma (pilot car), Lincoln Navigator, Land Rover Freelander, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS as well as a Ford Explorer.

In the video seen by SaharaReporters, the local chairman was spotted making his way to a function with a convoy that comprises the sophisticated cars.

Mixed reactions have trailed the clip as some tweeps found it unpleasant and knocked him for it.

I’ll Repeat What My Late Father, MKO Abiola Did On June 12, 1993 By Winning 2023 Presidential Poll, Says Kola Abiola

16 June 2022 - 3:53am

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party, Kola Abiola, has stated that he will repeat the feat achieved by his father, Chief MKO Abiola, in 1993, by winning the presidential election in 2023.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Mr Abiola who affirmed that it would be 30 years in 2023 since his late father won the presidential election, expressed confidence that “there is going to be a repeat in 2023”.

Kola Abiola stated this when he alongside the governorship candidates of the party received their certificates of return from the chairman of the party, Falalu Bello, at the national headquarters of the PRP in Abuja.

He asserted that he joined the PRP not because he was looking for a platform to contest the Presidency, but because of the party’s ideology.

According to him, the PRP’s biggest role in the general elections will be to serve as a bridge for the current generation of Nigerian youths.

He urged the party’s governorship candidates to ensure that youths obtained their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

He said, “I didn’t join the PRP because I was looking for a platform. I joined the PRP after doing my research. I joined because I believed in its ideology. There will be no sabotage from in-between because we have not eaten anything before.

“I want to appeal to the youth to know that we are the vehicle of change. We are going to run an all-inclusive government. If we can win the 1993 election about 30 years ago, we can also win it now. I won Kano in 1993 with my father, collectively, and we must win it again. To make this happen, our thought process must change.

“It reminds me of 1993. A lot of people came out for the first time to vote because of MKO. We are going to have a repeat of that in 2023. If we can win it then, we should win it now.”

“We are going to bring the younger generation into politics, governance and leadership. I’m appealing to youths to regard us as the vehicle of change. We should make sure that at the next election, we have the highest voter turnout. By this, we will make your voices and numbers count.

“This is the only party that doesn’t have any encumbrances. We will use that to build the future of Nigeria. We are a national party. To everybody’s surprise, we had 3,625 delegates at the primary elections.

"We are present in every local government area. We have 22 candidates for governorship elections and we have more than 500 candidates vying for other different offices. In the history of the PRP, this is the largest so far to date,” he added.

PRP would contest the 2023 governorship election in 21 states, the party’s national chairman, Falalu Bello said.

Buhari Is Enjoying While Future Of 1.5Million University Students Is At Stake Over Lecturers’ Strike – Sowore

16 June 2022 - 3:50am

Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is enjoying the lingering industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Sowore said that while students and lecturers have been roaming and groaning helplessly in the streets for the past four months that lecturers of public universities have been on strike, President Buhari has been busy enjoying himself.

Sowore on his Twitter page on Thursday lamented that there are over 1.5 million students whose future is at stake due to the lingering ASUU strike, whereas no one seems to care.

The #RevolutionNow convener added that the matter has been made worse as the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union has also joined the strike.

For 123 days now Nigerian University teachers have been on strike, also Nigerian students in Colleges of Education have been thrown into the streets, their teachers too are on strike. The @MBuhari is enjoying the prolonged strike, students are suffering and parents are agonizing

— Omoyele Sowore (@YeleSowore) June 16, 2022

He said, “For 123 days now Nigerian University teachers have been on strike, also Nigerian students in Colleges of Education have been thrown into the streets, their teachers too are on strike.

“The @MBuhari is enjoying the prolonged strike, students are suffering and parents are agonizing.

“There are over 1.5 million students whose future is at stake and no one seems to care. I lived through an era when the government was afraid of Nigerian students but today students are afraid of the government, they're scared to exercise their rights to have a future.

“I urge Nigerian students to bond together and force this despicable regime to #EndAsuuStrikeNow. It is a task that must be DONE!”

ASUU has been on strike for over four months to press home its demands.

The striking lecturers’ demands include funding for the revitalisation of public universities, Earned Academic Allowances, use of the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) and promotion arrears.

Also, the non-teaching staff of universities including Non-Academic Staff of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, SSANU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) have embarked on industrial actions after the failure of the government to meet the demands of the respective unions.

Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi Is Anti-Worker, Made Policies Unfavourable To Labour In Anambra As Governor — Democratic Socialist Movement

16 June 2022 - 1:35am

The Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM) has taken a swipe at former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi who is also the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

In a statement issued by Peluola Adewale, the DSM's Organising Secretary, Obi who is now a popular candidate among many Nigerian youths, was anti-labour when he was governor of Anambra State.

It condemned the endorsement of Obi as the presidential candidate of the Labour Party by the Nigeria Labour Congress, despite having promised alongside the Trade Union Congress, to reclaim the party and reposition it towards the interest of Nigerian workers and the poor whereas Obi's antecedents have shown he is anti-poor and anti-worker.

The group highlighted the alleged failures of Obi’s administration to meet the demands of Labour in Anambra, noting that during Obi's tenure as governor, state hospitals were shut down for 13 months upon his refusal to meet the demands of striking doctors.

Also, the state university was shut for more than six months. They added that workers of the state water corporation had to secure a court order against Obi’s successor, Willie Obiano, to pay salaries and entitlements which Obi had owed them for eight years

“Some of the workers were said to have died without salary, gratuity or pension. Also following a 2011 strike embarked upon by the state workers to demand the implementation of the legal minimum wage, Obi threatened to sack all Anambra state workers engaged since 2003, reviewed the appointment of non-indigenes and placed an embargo on the employment in the state services," the group said.

The movement described Obi as “a right-wing, neo-liberal capitalist politician who is not likely to genuinely subscribe to the NLC’s Charter of Demands”.

The group said while Obi is canvassing for votes, he may falsely endorse the ‘Charter of Demands’ in order to win the backing of the labour centres and by extension workers’ votes.

The DSM, however, opined that Obi may likely renounce this if he becomes President "except a serious struggle develops against his regime”.

The statement noted, “This is because he is at heart an anti-worker politician who defends the pro-rich capitalist system which is the root of the crises plaguing Nigeria as a neo-colonial economy.

“For instance, Obi objects to the inclusion of labour matters, including the minimum wage, as an item on the exclusive legislative list. To him, they should not be universal and centrally determined but rather separately by various state governments and the federal government (Vanguard January 3, 2019).

“In other words, contrary to the cardinal position of the NLC and TUC, Obi is opposed to the principle of national minimum wage. This explains why he allowed public hospitals and universities as well as courtrooms to shut down for many months.

“Moreover, beyond the documented tendency of Obi to be anti-worker, he is inveterately committed to the same neo-liberal capitalist philosophy and programme which largely accounts for the monumental failure of both PDP and APC governments since the return to civil rule in 1999 despite the colossal human and material resources of the country.

“We recall that while Obi was the Anambra state governor, he also doubled as an Economic Adviser to President Jonathan whose government earned historically the highest oil and gas revenue but created a serious mess, as a result of its economic agenda in addition to its egregious corruption, something which has been worsened by the Buhari government.

“More recently it cannot be ignored that at the last 2019 presidential election, Obi was the running mate of Atiku Abubakar whose signature role as the Vice President under Obasanjo government was the criminal sale of public assets to cronies as well as corrupt self-enrichment.

“Indeed, the Obasanjo government, which Atiku served, by its ruinous economic policies sped up deindustrialization of the country with collapse and relocation of many industries that used to provide mass jobs.

“There is not really any political or principled disagreement between Obi and Atiku. Obi indeed venerated Atiku as his leader in his congratulatory message following the victory of the latter in PDP’s primary. So, it is not really credible that he transformed himself into a genuine friend of labour.

“In any case, on the basis of his economic philosophy especially at a period of revenue crisis, burgeoning national debt and global capitalist crisis, Obi if elected, may not be able to demonstrate his so-called frugal management of resources let alone fulfil all his electoral promises.

“Indeed his ‘frugal’ management may be the banner under which he unleashes serious pro-capitalist attacks including austerity measures on the working people and youth.

"In addition, his alleged frugal management of resources, austere lifestyle and incorruptibility does really not add up when put to close scrutiny.

“For instance, there are allegations that he invested Anambra state funds in companies and businesses where either his family or himself had interest.

“Also, Obi was indicted in the Pandora papers, which were leaked last year by Premium Times and a consortium of 600 journalists from 150 new organisations across the world, of circumventing the provisions of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act by stashing wealth in offshore companies in order to avoid paying taxes.

“Each time he has been confronted with these and other allegations, Obi often claims ignorance of the law or opportunistically appeal to public opinion by reeling out specious figures of his performance in office without answering the allegations."

Also taking a swipe at the Labour Party, the DSM said the Party has become a trashcan where those rejected from political parties such as the All Progressives Congress; Peoples Democratic Party and others run to when they lose out on elections in the other parties.

The group said if Obi fails to secure the presidential seat come 2023, he will abandon the Labour Party just like every other politician who left “leading anti-poor parties like PDP, APC, APGA, ACN among others”.

It listed the names of politicians who have in the past used the Labour party after having lost out in the PDP or APC, but later dumped it to include Femi Pedro, Ayodele Fayose, Andy Uba, Ifeanyi Ubah, Joshua Dariye, Alao Akala, and Olusegun Mimiko.

DSM said, “At every election since 2007, the party’s electoral tickets are usually put on sale like a commodity for moneybag politicians looking for a party for the actualization of their self-serving ambition.

“For instance, currently, apart from Obi, the gubernatorial candidate of the party in Osun state is Yusuf Lasun, former Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives who lost out in the primary of APC while other anti-worker politicians including the past national chairman of APGA have also picked up different tickets of the party.

“The fact is that by the end of the selection exercise of its candidates the electoral list of the Labour Party  will not be fundamentally distinguishable from that of the APC and PDP.

“So, if it is not Obi, another moneybag politician would have bought the presidential ticket of the party or the party endorses APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu or Abubakar Atiku of the PDP, something that is not yet ruled out. In 2011 and 2015 elections, the Labour Party endorsed President Jonathan of the PDP as its candidate."

The DSM, however, noted that the Labour Party, with its choice of candidate, has shown that there is no hope for the poor masses.

Pointing out that the party is hypocritic, the DSM said it is wrong for a party which sold its nomination form at N30 million to describe itself as “the political vehicle of the downtrodden”.

It also noted that it is hypocritical for the party to present Obi and other right-wing politicians as “a voice for the re-start of a genuine journey of national development".

It said: “Many current labour leaders do not have an alternative economic programme to the neo-liberal capitalist agenda promoted by these characters, including Peter Obi, and also the fact that some labour leaders run as aspirants or candidates of the APC.

“This also explains why the recent leaderships of Labour are not fundamentally opposed to capitalist policies of privatisation and deregulation which, together with naira devaluation, worsen the devastating effects of the global crisis of capitalism on the quality of life of ordinary Nigerians.

“This underscores why activists have to link the campaign for a mass working people’s party with the need for fighting trade unionism with a socialist leadership."

The DSM further noted that the Labour Party cannot be said to be the voice of the masses as it is currently constituted of anti-poor capitalist moneybag politicians.

It stated that the poor need a party that can serve as a platform of struggle that daily intervenes in the plight of working people in communities and workplaces and mobilise mass resistance against all anti-poor capitalist policies.

DSM urged labour movement including trade unions, the People’s Alternative Political Movement (TPAP-M) Joint Action Front and other pro-masses organisations to begin to build a new party for the working people on a socialist programme that “consistently fights against every anti-poor capitalist policy and fight for political power”.

“Given the current economic crisis that will likely worsen as well as their pro-rich philosophies, whoever wins the 2023 election between Tinubu, Atiku and Obi will be unable to prevent the crisis hitting hard and will themselves unleash attacks on working people and youth including a hike in fuel prices, tax increase, school fees hike, etc.

“Therefore, we call on NLC, TUC, trade unions and pro-masses organisations to organise a series of mass resistance against the current economic hardship and prepare the working masses and youth against attacks and tumultuous struggle that may break out after 2023 elections."

2023: Those Supporting Peter Obi Wasting Their Money, He's Cursed, Stingy, Can't Be Nigeria's President – Father Mbaka

16 June 2022 - 12:38am

The controversial Enugu Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has claimed that those supporting the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, are wasting their money.

He spoke in a message at his Adoration Ministry in Enugu State.

The cleric described Obi as a stingy man who is not concerned about the plights of those around him.

He also declared that the former governor of Anambra State is under a curse, adding that except he comes to apologise to him, he will never be Nigeria's president.

Daily Post quoted him as saying: “A stingy man, that cannot give people his money, with this hunger ravaging the land, and you are saying he is the one you want. Do you want to die of hunger? Are you people insane? Where is the Holy Spirit?

“It is now that Atiku is seriously contesting for President; now that he is contesting without Peter Obi; it is now that he is serious? We want somebody that is serious. Unless Peter comes here to kneel, if he becomes President, he will close down this ministry. What we are doing is spiritual,

“Listen, a good old man is better than a young wicked man; Peter Obi is going nowhere as far as God lives. If Igbos want a representative, it is not someone like Peter Obi.

“I should not have talked but I saw my video going around everywhere as if Fr. Mbaka wholeheartedly came out and apologized. No, I didn’t apologize wholeheartedly, it was out of duress. I had to obey my Bishop, in obedience I had to, it is not of my volition. I did it because I am a Catholic Priest, my Bishop said, do it, my own is ‘Yes my Lord’.

“I did not say he is a bad man; I said he is a stingy man. A hungry man wants someone that is generous; the man has so much money, but he is ‘I, me, myself’. But that money will not be useful to him. I am very happy now that I have spoken out. That apology is a poisonous curse against Peter Obi.

"If he is wise, he should have come here after that apology to say he is sorry but he waited. Anybody supporting him is wasting his money, he is going nowhere.

“He is my friend. When he was chased out of Government House, he knew the role I played to bring him back, but how did he pay me back? Night meetings we attended to bring him back, ask him, ask Eselu Uga, ask Archbishop Anikwenwa, they know where and how we did it and he was brought back.

“Ask Peter since then what he used to reward Adoration. If you like Peter Obi, tell him to come and ask for forgiveness. Let him come and redo what he did. There is an altar of God he blasphemed; he defiled an altar of God, the Holy Spirit.

“I called Atiku after that apology, he was in Dubai, I told him that there is a revelation on your presidential election; that you are going to be the President of Nigeria on one condition, that Peter Obi is not going to be your running mate. Peter Obi has incurred a curse to himself, which means that he is carrying a curse; if you want to be President, change him.

“Atiku responded that I cannot, Peter must be my running mate, we must win. You saw what happened. Atiku is still alive. That is why I said it is now that Atiku is preparing to be President.

“Just like Jonathan, I called him, God has shown that you are going to win this election but on one condition; Jega should be changed. If you change Jega you will win Buhari, but if you don’t, Buhari will win you. Goodluck told me, ‘Fr. I will not remove Jega, we will still win’. He held on to Jega and failed."

Tinubu’s Blind Ambition Provoking A Civil War By SKC Ogbonnia

16 June 2022 - 12:06am

The blind ambition of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rule Nigeria at all costs is on course to provoke a civil war. But this war will not be fought between the Yoruba and the Igbo, as Tinubu would wish; it is a civil war between the Nigerian masses and the corrupt oligarchy that he represents.

Keenly aware that he is neither physically fit nor morally sound to mount a presidential campaign let alone govern Nigeria, Mr. Tinubu is already attempting to win by hook or crook. Barely less than one week after grabbing the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he is already fanning the embers of war. Very glaring is a recent incident in which armed thugs were sent to disrupt the traders of Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos State, who went the extra mile to shut their shops in order to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC).  Any serious inquiry into the mayhem would reveal a page from Tinubu’s patented plot to control the Lagos State electorate by terror.

A sham selling point in Tinubu’s march to the APC nomination is the assumption that he dictates who wins and who loses in Nigeria’s most populous state of Lagos. But, as an APC chieftain and the governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, noted in a recent speech, Tinubu has been able to lord himself over the good people of the state because of low voter turnout. "Here in Lagos, you have over six million registered voters, only about a million voted (in 2019 general elections); five million did not vote.”

This low voter turnout is rooted in Tinubu’s lack of popularity among the masses. To that end, he has always deployed all manners of terror to suppress the votes of his opponents. Like the attack on the Igbo traders at Alaba International Market, armed thugs were also used to unleash terror on the voters in many parts of Lagos State with a heavy Igbo population during the 2019 elections.

Tinubu’s penchant to incite the Yoruba against the Igbo is well chronicled. Recall the murder of Funke Olakunrin, the daughter of Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti, by Fulani herdsmen. In an attempt to appease the Fulani, whom he believes would crown him president, Tinubu quickly exonerated the herdsmen without any iota of evidence. Instead, he stoked the name of Chukwudi Onuamadike, popularly known as Evans, a notorious kidnapper, to suggest that heinous crimes in Nigeria owe their origin to Igboland.

Follow the above with the callous attempt by Remi, the wife of Tinubu, to instigate hatred against the Igbo living in Lagos. In one instance, she was caught on camera on a campaign trail spewing the following snide: “Igbo, we no dey trust una again!”

One must not forget the case of Tinubu’s close ally, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, who peddled the false allegation that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a predominantly Igbo group, was planning to wreak havoc in Lagos. Further, Tinubu cannot feign ignorance of the origin of another false claim by state authorities that the IPOB was behind the burning of the palace of Oba of Lagos and other public infrastructure during the #EndSARS protest in the year 2020.

In each of these instances, however, the Yoruba masses and their true leaders have been bold to denounce Tinubu’s evil machinations. They have resolved to stand side by side with their Igbo counterparts for the common good.

The Nigerian masses are becoming wiser. They are beginning to recognize that the powerful corrupt cabal, where Ahmed Bola Tinubu is a high chief, has no sympathy for what the ordinary man or woman is going through—be it Igbo, Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, Ijaw, Tiv, etc. They must resist the temptation to shed each other’s blood, by fighting the Tinubu war. The only war the masses ought to be united to fight, and must fight, is against the corrupt elite. The purpose is to reclaim our country. The year is 2023. The ammunition is the PVC!

Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, a 2019 APC Presidential Aspirant, writes from Houston, Texas.

Islamic Group Tells Buhari Government To Hold India Accountable For Allegedly Condoning Blasphemy, Cruelty Against Muslims

16 June 2022 - 12:06am

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned the treatment of Muslims in India, saying the cruelty Muslims suffer in the Asian country negatively impacts Nigerian Muslims.

Many Muslim countries have condemned India after Nupur Sharma, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), made comments about the prophet’s private life during a debate on TV that many Muslims described as insulting.

Sharma later said on Twitter that she had reacted to “continuous insult” towards a Hindu god but that she had withdrawn her statement. She has since been suspended and the police in New Delhi said they had filed a complaint against her.

Also, the party expelled its media head, Naveen Kumar Jindal, who had also made controversial statements against Islam, describing his views on social media as capable of causing conflict.

In a statement signed by MURIC’s Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the group also condemned India for denying female students the right to wear hijab in schools, saying Muslims are being maltreated in the country.

It said, “The failure of India’s ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) to sack its spokesperson, Nupur Sharma, who blasphemed against Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) confirms the complicity of the Indian government.

“We demand that Nupur Sharma should be sacked. Her mere suspension is sheer window dressing and the height of hypocrisy.

“We call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to set the machinery in motion for holding India accountable. We demand that the Indian ambassador to Nigeria be summoned for a tough reprimand.”

It noted that the Nigerian government led by Muhammadu Buhari must make India “realise that its cruelty to Muslims within its borders is impacting negatively on Nigerian Muslims”.

Nigerian Arrested In UK, Extradited To Malta To Face Romance Fraud Charges

16 June 2022 - 12:03am

A 41-year-old Nigerian national, Johnson Anene has been remanded in custody after being brought to Malta to face fraud and money laundering charges.

According to MaltaToday, Anene who lived in St Paul’s Bay before leaving for the UK, appeared in court on Wednesday after being arrested in Britain and transferred to the custody of the Maltese authorities on the strength of a European Arrest Warrant.

Anene who pleaded not guilty to the charges had been placed on the wanted list by the police in connection with the arraignment, last year, of several other individuals accused of playing a part in an online romance fraud scam.

One of the accused persons was former footballer Sunday Eboh.

According to the report, the group’s elderly victim had been duped into sending money to a person pretending to be a lonely American soldier deployed in Afghanistan. That case is still ongoing.

The court during Anene’s hearing was told that the ongoing investigations into the romance fraud scheme, being carried out by Paola district police, together with the Financial Crime Unit, had identified Anene.

Magistrate Rachel Montebello was told by Prosecuting lawyers Abigail Caruana Vella, Sean Xerri de Caro and Karl Muscat, together with Inspectors Claire Borg, Sarah Kathleen Zerafa to give an order that Anene’s assets should be frozen.

The court was informed by the defence counsel lawyer Rachel Tua that the extradition was not being contested and made a request for bail, emphasising the accused’s strong family ties to Malta.

The request was opposed by the prosecution, who argued that the investigation had revealed that Anene had fled Malta to escape prosecution for these crimes.

It was only recently that he had been arrested in the UK under the EAW issued by Malta and transferred into the custody of the Maltese police.

Meanwhile, the court did not uphold the bail request, ordering the man to be remanded in custody.

Netflix Plans ‘Squid Game’ Reality Show With Record $4.56Million Cash Prize

16 June 2022 - 12:02am

Netflix has announced a new reality TV show, Squid Game: The Challenge.

The company disclosed this in a statement, adding that the “Squid Game” will be without any of the blood and gore and contestants will not lose their lives, CNBC reports.

The streaming platform said the game will pit 456 contestants against each other in a series of games inspired by the hit show.

Up for grabs is a $4.56 million reward — which Netflix says is the largest cash prize in reality TV history.

“The stakes are high, but in this game the worst fate is going home empty-handed,” the company said in a statement Tuesday.

Netflix has opened casting for the show to English-language speakers around the world. Filming will take place in the U.K. The series is being co-produced by production firms Studio Lambert and The Garden, which is part of British broadcaster ITV.

Released in 2021, “Squid Game” quickly became an international success.

Squid Game is Netflix’s most-watched show of all time with people dedicating 1.65 billion hours of viewing time in the first 28 days of its release.

Set in South Korea, “Squid Game” sees 456 players in financial hardship risk their lives through various deadly children’s games for a large cash prize. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator, took inspiration for the show from his own family’s struggles after the 2008 financial crisis. A second series is now officially in the works.

Netflix said “Squid Game: The Challenge” will feature games from the original series as well some “surprising new additions.” It will comprise 10 episodes in total.

The show could be a way for Netflix to use some of its lucrative content to bring more users to the platform. The company is facing headwinds from the impact of rising inflation, the removal of Covid-19 restrictions and competition from rival firms like Disney.

Senate President Contested For APC Presidential Ticket Because He Didn’t Plan To Return To Senate In 2023 – Machina Insists He Won’t Step Down For Lawan

15 June 2022 - 2:36pm

Senate President Ahmad Lawan

The senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress for Yobe North, Bashir Machina has insisted that he is still in the race and is not willing to relinquish his ticket for the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan.
Lawan had contested the presidential ticket of the party but lost to a former Lagos governor and national leader of the party, Bola Tinubu.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan

Meanwhile, Machina won the primaries of the party for the Yobe North in Lawan’s absence. Lawan had hoped Machina would relinquish the ticket to him following his failed bid to win the APC presidential ticket, but Machina has insisted that he will not step down for Lawan.
Machina during an interview on Channels TV, monitored by SaharaReporters on Wednesday, said Lawan did not contest for the senatorial seat while expressing confidence that the leaders of the party, whom he described as law-abiding, would not want to go against the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
According to him, he is sure Lawan is not planning to return to the Senate after his tenure ends in 2023.
“He (Lawan) didn’t believe and I’m sure he didn’t plan to go back to the National Assembly; that’s why he contested for President and lost,” he said.
“No, Ahmad Lawan did not contest for the Senate, of course, it’s a known fact that he contested for president and lost and when I contested for the senatorial ticket, Senator Ahmad Lawan did not participate or contest so I don’t think that may be in any way an issue.
“The motto of APC is justice and peace and then, of course, this is a party that’s being led by responsible law-abiding citizens, so being law-abiding, you think that it will be part of the law or it will be considered as justice for you to say well, somebody had a mandate from the people who elected him and then you change him suddenly overnight. No, I’m sure my party will not just do that, I’m confident my leaders are very fair and just, going by the motto of the party – justice and peace,” he said.
Machina also noted that it would be wrong for the leaders of the party to replace his name with that of Lawan in the list to be submitted to the electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said, “I won’t say my name is serendipitously replaced or whatever, you know the electoral act is very clear. Somebody, I don’t think in this era, will just sit down and remove someone’s name and replace another person’s name, especially somebody that didn’t undergo the process of that primary election. Somebody that didn’t contest an election, naturally can’t be in that election that’s covered by the law and the Electoral Act.”

Speaking on who might be behind the speculations that he had stepped down, Machina noted, “Maybe some power play.”
He continued, “It’s a reality that we just finished the presidential primaries, that is, we finished all the primaries from top to bottom.
“Maybe some politicians who are not prepared to contest for certain elections got themselves contesting the elections, thinking that somehow, somewhere they will come across some luck to pick the ticket. People who are not actually fit enough to contest certain offices went about and then maybe eventually they are contemplating that they should get back to their actual level, maybe so.”
He stressed that he did not emerge as a consensus candidate but was announced the winner of the primary election after contesting with others.
Machina had 289 votes out of the 300 votes cast by the delegates from six local government areas.
Machina added that he intentionally didn’t fill out the withdrawal form mandated for all aspirants in the APC to fill because he was not in the contest to withdraw.

Many Students Protesting 3-Year Unpaid Bursaries Reportedly Land In Hospital After Suffering Police Assault, Tear Gas, Beatings With Guns In Delta

15 June 2022 - 1:08pm

Some protesting students were on Wednesday injured by the Nigeria Police in Warri, Delta State.

Delta State students studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria, on Wednesday protested to show their displeasure with the Managing Director of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Askia Ogieh, for allegedly refusing to pay them their three years bursaries.

Ogieh had in April 2022 resigned his position as Managing Director of DESOPADEC to contest the just concluded Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries for the Isoko Federal House of Representatives but he was defeated.

Surprisingly, he was reappointed on Tuesday by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

The students, who were in their hundreds, brandished placards with different inscriptions such as "Students’ lives matter", "We need our bursary, education is now expensive", "Askia has used our money to run his PDP House of Representatives primary". "Askia paid each delegate N3 million during the PDP house of representatives primary but denied us our rights", "We need our bursary", “DESOPADEC is bleeding because of the looting of our commonwealth," and "Delta politicians have finished DESOPADEC."

SaharaReporters gathered that the aggrieved students who stormed the headquarters of the commission in Warri, immediately barricaded the entrance gate of the commission, demanding their unpaid bursaries.
However, it was learnt that some of the students were hit with guns and tasered by the police. Many of them reportedly sustained varying degrees of injury during the protest.

It was learnt that the injured protesters were quickly rushed to the hospital.
However, SaharaReporters could not confirm if the condition of the students in the hospital had deteriorated or not.
President of the National Association of Delta Ijaw Students, Comrade Ayigote Festus, who confirmed the incident, told GbaramatuVoice that they notified the police commissioner, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Area Commander in Warri before embarking on the protest.

Festus said even though they promised the police that the protest would be peaceful and not violate any laws, it did not stop the police from using guns to hit students.
He said many injured students were in the hospital.

He said, "Before we embarked on the protest, we informed the Commissioner of Police, DSS, Area Commander, Warri, that we were carrying out a peaceful protest. We told them that we were not going to destroy any property or violate any law.

"We were having conversations with the board on the way out and before we knew it, police had gotten orders to shoot at us. They used teargas on us and used electric gadgets to shock students.

"They also used their guns to hit students. As I’m talking to you now, lots of students are lying in the hospital," he added.

The spokesman for the state police command, DSP Bright Edafe, told SaharaReporters that nobody was shot, stressing that the students were allowed to protest for more than four hours.

He admitted that the police dispersed the protesters with tear gas, saying they became violent and started attacking the staff members of DESOPADEC.
He said the protesters also blocked a major highway, adding that nobody has the right to block a highway irrespective of their grievances.

"They came and started attacking the workers, were destroying properties, and later blocked the expressway. So they were dispersed with the use of tear gas; nobody was injured to our knowledge," he said.

Ondo Church Massacre: Islamic Leaders Sign Peace Pact With Christian Counterparts In Ogun, Say Muslims Are Not Killers

15 June 2022 - 12:58pm

The leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria and the League of Imams and Alfas in Ogun State have signed a pact to continue living in harmony.

This move to instil peace and harmony among adherents of the two religions followed the massacre at St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-Iuwa, Owo in Ondo state.

The leaders of the two religions, according to The Punch, struck the deal on Wednesday when a delegation of the League of Imams and Alfas submitted a condolence letter over the attack of Christians in Owo to the CAN Chairman, Bishop Tunde Akin-Akinsanya.

SaharaReporters had reported that gunmen suspected to be Islamic terrorists, invaded St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, killed no fewer than 40 worshippers and injured several others, some of whom are still receiving treatment in various hospitals in the state. People, groups and countries have condemned the attack, describing it as evil and unprovoked.

But according to the report, the Secretary-General of the League of Imams and Alfas, Sheikh Tajudeen Adewunmi, led the Islamic leaders in the condolence visit to the CAN Chairman at the organisation’s Abeokuta office.

Adewunmi who was accompanied by Imam of Makun, Sagamu, Dr. Tajudeen Ashaye, and other religious leaders across the state described the Owo attack as unfortunate, saying that Muslims in the state were pained by the incident.

He said there was no reason why any Muslim should invade a church or attack any Christian in the name of religion.

He said, “We decided to pay a condolence visit to you on behalf of all Muslims in the state over the Owo incident.

“We are here to show our displeasure to the killings and to also assure you that Muslims are not killers and will not attack Christians in the state.

“We have seen ourselves as a family and we will continue to relate as such. We have Christians and Muslims in our families. We have no reason to attack ourselves."

“On behalf of the entire Muslims in Ogun State, the league felt concerned, that is why we were asked to come down and show our condolence.

“We, the Muslims have come to register our condolence. And we are here to assure you that the Muslims in Ogun state are very peaceful, we are very friendly with Christians. We pray that such a thing will never happen again,” he added.

The CAN chairman thanked the delegation, describing their visit as reassuring and noting that Christians do not see Muslims as killers.

He said, “It is not very easy for us here to fight. Those who did it are neither Muslims nor Christians. They are satanic.

“They are our enemies. They are not Muslims. Such things that are happening in the north cannot happen here because we are a family. You hardly see any family without the two religions, but it is unfortunate that such a thing happened. The attack came from our arch enemies.

“I am so happy. Let’s say that, this is the first time this kind of thing will happen and I want to commend the leadership of the Islamic religion in Ogun state for this. I pray almighty God bless all of us.

“In my own family, I even have someone that is next to Chief Imam in Ijebu-land before he died, my elder brother, same father, same mother and we were close.

“These attackers are neither Muslims nor Christians. They cannot find a place where people are asked to kill others in the Quran or Bible, it means they are satanic.”

Nigerian Man Wanted In U.S. In Case Of Missing Woman Googled 'How To Be A Serial Killer, Kill Without Getting Caught' – Houston Police

15 June 2022 - 12:46pm

The police in Houston, Texas have declared wanted a 28-year-old Nigerian man identified as Chukwuebuka Nwobodo, for killing a 24-year-old California woman, Felicia Johnson, after searching online “how to get away with murder,” “how to be a serial killer” and “does bleach destroy DNA” some days after the deceased disappeared.

The Texas-based fugitive was charged last week with murder and tampering with evidence in relation to Felicia’s disappearance in Houston in April this year, New York Post reports.

Nwobodo was said to have killed and dismembered Felicia inside his apartment on April 16 before disposing of her body.

It was reported that court documents showed that the suspect was reported to have been captured on surveillance video where he bought trash bags, gloves, a mechanical saw, shovel and flashlight at a Walmart and Home Depot on April 16 and 17.

Meanwhile, after days without seeing Felicia’s body, her cell phone was found in blood off the roadway in Bear Creek Pioneers Parks near Highway 6 and Clay Road.
Officers said that a member of Texas EquuSearch found a purse nearby the same scene matching the description of Johnson’s purse.

According to police, Nwobodo had ordered an Uber for Felicia from her hotel to his apartment the night she eventually disappeared, after posting an advertisement on an escort website.

When she could not return after some days, her family told police that she had travelled to Houston to celebrate her birthday and earn some extra money.

Police said they tracked Nwobodo through investigating the Uber that had conveyed Felicia.

The suspect was arrested on May 13, but he was released at the time because police said there was not enough evidence to charge him for Felicia’s disappearance.

But during a search of his apartment, investigators said that there were blood stains all over his Richmond Avenue apartment, including the hallway floor outside the bathroom, and throughout the bedroom.

Authorities said that a test carried out on the blood showed a match to Johnson’s DNA profile.

Investigators also said that photos of a dismembered body were also found on Nwobodo’s phone, but the victims in the photos were not identified and no metadata was associated with them, KHOU reports.

After searching the phone, police also found DNA and blood that strongly match the victim inside Nwobodo’s apartment.

It was reported that over the next three weeks after the incident, Nwobodo allegedly searched online multiple times for how to destroy evidence.

He also searched “how to kill without getting caught,” “how to be a serial killer,'' “what does bleach do to blood” and “most forested part of Houston.”

Nwobodo was previously accused of sexual assault in November 2020, police said.

A woman claimed he tried to rape her in his vehicle. She got out and broke free after he chased her down and grabbed her wrist, the woman said in the probable cause affidavit. Police said she later denied there was any violence or sexual assault. She said she did not want to press charges, and just wanted to go home, Law&Crime reports.

Push For Muslim-Muslim Presidential Ticket Is A Well-funded Campaign By Islamic Fundamentalists Like Governor El-Rufai– Nigerian Human Rights Writers

15 June 2022 - 12:31pm

Kaduna State Governor Nasiru Ahmed El-Rufai

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has described the ruling All Progressives Congress’ (APC) reported move to field Muslim presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the 2023 general elections as a poisonous chalice.

The group also described it as confirmation of claims that President Muhammadu Buhari’s government wants to ‘Islamise’ Nigeria.

Kaduna State Governor Nasiru Ahmed El-Rufai

The group accused the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai and other Northern Muslims of using some Southern Christians including the former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu and former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode to push for a violation of constitutional provision on federal character.

The group said, “We are uniquely worried by the organised and well-choreographed, well oiled, well-funded and properly engineered campaigns by Islamic fundamentalists such as Governor Nasir El-Rufai and others using some Christians like Orji Kalu, Femi Fani-Kayode to canvass the infantile opinion that either it does not matter that candidates for the office of President, Vice President or Governor and Deputy Governor should comply with the simple constitutional demand of the federal character principles in appointments and elective positions.”

The group, therefore, warned the APC and other political parties against presenting a Muslim-Muslim ticket for their presidential candidates, saying it is capable of causing hatred and sectarian division in the country.

It insisted that the plan to continuously dominate all the key political positions in Nigeria including the President, Vice President, Chief Justice of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives with Muslims and also maintain President Buhari’s appointment of only Muslims to head the top security agencies is unacceptable.
Kalu, drummed support for Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan’s presidential bid before the latter lost the race in his party’s presidential primary election last week, also on Wednesday said APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu can choose a Muslim from the North as his running mate.

Kalu’s argument is that Tinubu’s wife is a Christian, but HURIWA described Kalu’s position as “puerile, irrational and totally illogical and warped thinking.”

The group added that Kalu’s assertion is like presuming that the office of the President of Nigeria is like the office of the General Overseer of a Pentecostal Church.

“It is aware that the plot is to foist an Islamic state because what will happen is that Bola Ahmed Tinubu who is a hard-core Muslim extremist but masquerading as a moderate because his wife is a so-called deacon in Redeemed Christian Church of God,” the group said.

"We're Worried, Concerned, Working Towards Early Resolution Of University Lecturers' Strike"— Buhari Government Says 4 Months Into ASUU’s Industrial Action

15 June 2022 - 12:22pm

The Nigerian government, on Wednesday, claimed it is worried over the continued closure of public universities in the country as the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have refused to call off their strike action.

ASUU has been on strike for four months to press home its demands.

Briefing journalists on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Buhari, the Minister of information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the government had made efforts to find a lasting solution to the contentious issues.

However, he noted that the issues surrounding the long closure of the educational institutions are complicated.

Mohammed said the issues with the university unions were not as simple as many people thought.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, Lai Mohammed said, “I wish that the ASUU issue is as simple as many of us think it is. I don’t think it’s that simple. But I want to assure you that a lot is going on behind the scenes.

“And I think probably the Minister of Education will be better positioned to give the details. But like any government, if we’re not concerned, we would not set up all the committees which have been working on. If we are not concerned, we will not be looking for means to even assuage the feelings of the Union.

“We’re worried, we’re concerned, and we’ll continue to work towards finding an early resolution of the problem.”
